Choosing a Renovator

Usually after the initial telephone call, followed by the first meeting you will know if you feel comfortable and trust the renovation contractor. However it is important not to make your choice on “feelings” alone.

Here is a quick checklist to review before making your final decision.

  1. Does the Renovation Contractor provide Design Build service, allowing me to deal only with one point of contact through out the entire renovation?
  2. Will I receive a written contract?
  3. Will I get references of past clients to check?
  4. Does the Renovation Contractor belong to the local and/or provincial Home Builders Association and Better Business Bureau?
  5. Does the Renovation Contractor have Liability Insurance coverage as well as coverage through the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB)
  6. Does the Renovation Contractor provide me with written Change Orders for changes that happen throughout the project therefore keeping me informed of the costs each step along the way?
  7. Will I receive a 5-year Warranty and will the renovator still be in business to honour it?
  8. Is the contractor Green Conscious?
  9. Did the representative listen to my needs and provide me with creative ideas and helpful information?
  10. Will I be comfortable with this Renovation Contractor in my home?
