Where do you start – and where do you stop? This is a dilemma all of us face when making change. Trends come and go. How do we embrace the new without feeling like everything needs to be revamped? We may live in an “all or nothing” inspired culture, but previous generations spent 25 yrs perfecting their one and only home! Today we move more frequently, spend more money and have higher expectations, but there is definitely a call for balance.
I know, I know, you’re thinking “all you Designers are the cause” and I agree that the industry reputation is that we always want to change it all…make it BIG. But that isn’t necessarily the case in the real world. “Reality” TV showcases the biggest disasters, the biggest renovations, the biggest budgets and the most EXTREME cases for entertainment value. They are paid to be dramatic. Many of us are much more humble than that, at least I like to think so! Most importantly, however, it is our responsibility to take our client’s budgets, needs and desires…and present solutions that are a balance of all those elements.
Enter the “Transitional” aesthetic. Transitional style is about finding a balance between the old and the new so that they complement each other without making one look too trendy or the other too dated. Balancing warm & cool, contemporary & traditional and working with scale & texture makes our feature project a great example of this. Hand-scraped flooring and natural stone that speak to an earlier time mixed with linear elements and glossy finishes create a modern surrounding that can incorporate older & period style pieces. What a success!
