Century Character, Thoughtfully Updated

Two-story Home Addition in Kitchener.
The renovation challenge
Our client wanted to maintain the character in their century home, but their growing family desperately needed some extra space and storage for the living space. They adore the close-knit atmosphere in their neighbourhood, so they preferred to stay and remodel with a custom addition rather than sell.

A growing family needed more space to plant their roots.
The Pioneer Design-Build Solution
This custom addition preserved the natural century charm chic of the home, while adding more functionality and space for the family. First, we removed an old home addition and built a two-story home addition which allowed for two new bedrooms in the second-floor addition and an ensuite in the master bedroom upstairs. This renovation also included a new mudroom downstairs on the main floor, complete with stylish custom storage, lots of space to organize their outdoor clothes, backpacks, and clutter without impeding entry into the home. Freeing up extra space while decluttering the space … a parent's dream! The main floor saw a complete change after the removal of a wall between the living and dining spaces, and the creation of pass-through and transom windows. Now Mom can keep a watchful eye on the children playing while she preps in the kitchen. We improved access to the basement by relocating the stairs to the opposite corner. Adding a small window helped brighten things up and add some natural light to the space. Now there’s no dark stairway here! The stunning patterned tiles in the entryway and mudroom add a touch of whimsy and interest to normally utilitarian spaces. The master bedroom sports a new dormer that lets in the perfect amount of natural light, and the addition of a closet allows for more hidden storage. A brand new ensuite with shower now graces the room, and a “barn” door with hardware was repurposed from inside the wall of the downstairs living room. This unique feature showcases the thoughtful design and charm with some rugged history. The addition allowed enough space for a laundry nook in the upper hall, and Mom was thrilled with the new space! She also loves that we exposed more of the original yellow exterior brick throughout the home. The brick is visible in many of the rooms upstairs and showcases the home’s century charm. Thanks to the work of Pioneer’s home addition contractors, this family has all the space they need to live their lives to the fullest in a space they’ll cherish.
