Where Gothic Character Meets Modern Farmhouse Living

After years of loving their cozy, character-filled home, these empty nesters were ready to give the exterior a fresh, modern update.
Inspired (and slightly alarmed) by a neighbor’s siding project that uncovered hidden water damage, they knew it was time to act. With plans to stay another 5–10 years, they wanted peace of mind—and a more polished curb appeal to match the charm of their quaint street.

The Pioneer Design-Build Solution
Through the design-build process, multiple options were explored—including additions—but ultimately, the smartest path was enhancing the home within its existing footprint.
A key update was expanding the kitchen window to overlook the backyard, boxed out with a small roof overhang to brighten the interior and soften the rear elevation.
New board-and-batten siding in crisp white, paired with bold black windows, gave the home a fresh modern farmhouse aesthetic while honoring its Gothic-inspired roots. Removing the old brick divider in the upper arch window transformed its impact, while vertical lines emphasized the home’s height.
Sentimental restoration of handmade porch brackets—crafted years ago by the homeowner’s father with a bird motif—preserved a personal legacy within the refreshed look. Reducing the number of front porch posts improved sightlines and added to the streamlined aesthetic.
