Modern Cottage Living, Reimagined

Three-story addition in Cambridge including a new garage and front entrance, new interior staircase, extra bedrooms, and a remodeled kitchen.
The renovation challenge
Our clients first fell in love with the charm of their lively neighbourhood and the unique hillscape property surrounded by mature trees, which gave them a surreal feeling that they were living in a treehouse. But it wasn’t long before this family began outgrowing their quaint cottage-like home. Our main challenge, along with the requirement for additional living space, was removing an unnecessary widow staircase in the middle of the existing kitchen that was preventing optimal flow and functionality from the kitchen into the rest of the home.

A busy household with pets and young kids that all have a love of nature.
The Pioneer Design-Build Solution
Their love for the outdoors and the original character of their old home drove the design for natural textures and finishes; to withstand the energetic and growing family we included a focus on durability. Removing the awkward staircase opened new potential for the space and allowed us to design a large open-concept kitchen with ample storage and a sensible workflow. Custom cabinetry and storage solutions relieved every pain point these clients had in the old kitchen. The forest green island, wood-toned flooring, honed countertops, and unique textures helped bring the outside in.Since this house was originally built in the 1950's, we re-insulated the exterior kitchen wall and added new three-pane windows to allow comfort all year round and better energy efficiency.
