Walkout Wonder
This family’s home received a smart and stylish transformation that made the most of their available space—both inside and out. The project centered on expanding an unfinished walk-out basement by adding a carefully designed addition. The goal? To maximize interior living areas for a generously sized family room and playroom, while minimizing impact on the recently hardscaped backyard.
By repositioning the existing deck staircase to the side, the renovation opened up unobstructed views of the yard and created a private nook for a hot tub. Outdoor living was a key priority, with ample room for cooking, lounging, and dining seamlessly integrated into the design. The new basement addition features a flat roof, perfect for supporting an expanded deck with a roof structure incorporating four skylights—bringing natural light into the lower level without darkening the interior.
To enhance outdoor comfort, remote-controlled bug screens were installed along the deck’s railing perimeter, complemented by a retractable sliding screen that creates a bug-free zone, perfect for relaxing evenings. Inside, a centrally located wet bar was designed for easy access during family movie nights and entertaining.
Though not originally requested, a powder room was added—a practical addition especially with the newly installed hot tub. Clever storage solutions include a discreet “secret hideout” beneath the staircase for the kids, which will double as extra storage as the family’s needs evolve.
Exterior design thoughtfully echoes the existing color palette for a cohesive look. Though plans to reuse salvaged brick shifted due to supply challenges, a complementary stone was chosen to beautifully highlight the back wall of the addition, with salvaged brick used on the sides for continuity. The multi-panel glass door floods the family room with light and connects indoor living to the backyard, enhancing flow for gatherings.
A standout architectural detail is the incorporation of substantial steel beams—supporting the removal of dividing walls and creating a coffered ceiling that elegantly hides ceiling height differences, adding visual interest and a sense of openness.
Overall, this renovation balances generous living spaces with thoughtful outdoor integration, ensuring the family can spread out comfortably and enjoy every inch of their home.
