Designed for Gathering, Inside and Out

Deck resurfacing with new pergola, redesign of laundry room & refresh of kitchen and fireplace wall.
The renovation challenge
The transition from the outdoor entertaining space to the powder room was via a narrow hall which also accessed the laundry room. Initially, the client thought removing a hall closet to create a bench cove for hooks and towels would meet the needs of guests and improve use of this area, as it lacked a place for easy storage of guest bags and clothes when coming over to enjoy a dip in the pool. The outdoor space originally had a built-in fridge and BBQ, but the fridge was decommissioned long ago, and the BBQ was leaving smoke residue on the brick in its current position against the house on a narrow deck section accessible from the Family Room doors.
Improving the shape and size of the kitchen island was the catalyst for a complete overhaul of the kitchen along with updating the laundry room. Optimizing the view of the yard while gaining additional natural light was essential. Creating a better space to get crafty with the grandchildren without using the kitchen was considered ideal.

the family
This energetic homeowner enjoys being the hub for various family gatherings. With an already beautifully established backyard with extensive deck and amenities (Hello, pool!), she wanted to revive the aging deck and elevate the interior with additional functionality to improve her guest’s experience and begin the next stage of her vibrant life as her family continues to grow with grandchildren.
The Pioneer Design-Build Solution
During the initial concept phase we developed a plan that entirely removed the partition wall between the rear entry hall and the laundry room. This created a combined multi-purpose space, which included a new powder room door location, elevating the flow of the home and creating a highly functional wash & play area with extra space to mingle around an island. We positioned the new pergola in a location that enhanced the view from the enlarged kitchen window and expanded the deck landing that connects to the new multi-purpose space, which now facilitates barbequing and entertaining with additional ease, given direct access to a beverage fridge and sink just inside the door, and its relative position in relationship to the pergola for dining.
